Kohlenklau is back again. The term "Kohlenklau" comes from Nazi Germany and is tied to a major propaganda campaign. It literally means "Coal Thief" in German. It was a cartoon figure, depicted as a sneaky, thin man in dark clothes and a mask, stealing coal. The character was used by propaganda to warn people against wasting coal, which was vital to Germany's wartime economy (coal was needed for heating, industry, and military purposes). Kohlenklau was part of a broader propaganda effort encouraging saving food, electricity, gasoline, etc. Similar characters were invented for other campaigns, like "Lichtklau" (stealing light/electricity).

The Kohlenklau Quartet Game

The journey of coal from its extraction to its final use. It teaches us how valuable every piece of coal is, every cubic centimeter of gas, and every watt of electricity. Even more valuable, however, are the many chemical and pharmaceutical products made from or with coal. Therefore, we must stay vigilant and help ensure that Kohlenklau (the Coal Thief) gets nothing into his infamous sack.

How to play

The game is played like any other well-known quartet card game.
Additionally, there is an alternative gameplay method:
  • Each quartet consists of two black (1 and 2) and two red (3 and 4) markers.
  • This creates 16 duets from the 32 cards, which are collected in the same way as quartets.
  • To these 32 cards, the Kohlenklau card is added — similar to the "Black Peter" card in the "Black Peter" game.
Gameplay proceeds as follows:
  • One player begins by drawing a card from the left-hand neighbor.
  • That neighbor then draws from the next, and so on, each time choosing from concealed cards.
  • The player who is left holding the Kohlenklau card at the end is the loser — and thus, the Kohlenklau!

Package contains 34 cards.
