Wehrschach, also known as Tak-Tik, was introduced in 1937/1938 by the German National Socialist magazine Die Wehrmacht. The game adapted a chess-like format to a modern military theme, featuring pieces such as Infantry, Armor, Fighter and Bomber aircraft, Artillery, and a distinctive central piece called the Hauptfigur (symbolically represented the state’s leadership, industrial strength, and national morale).
The game is played on an 11 × 11 board, with each player commanding 18 three-dimensional Bakelite pieces. Most pieces move only vertically or horizontally, though with varying ranges. Each playing figure has different movement, precisely described in instructions.
Capturing differs from traditional chess: instead of a single attacking piece, a unit must be threatened simultaneously by two opposing pieces to be taken.
The board itself is marked by diagonal lines representing a main road and a river, along with horizontal lines across the 3rd and 9th ranks symbolizing walls. Two lake squares further restrict movement, blocking all units except aircraft.
While the overall flow resembles chess, Wehrschach includes special movement and combat rules for its various unit types. Victory can be achieved in multiple ways: capturing the Hauptfigur, eliminating all enemy Infantry, reducing the opponent’s overall combat strength, occupying their homeland, and more. Combined with the two-to-one capture requirement, these mechanics make the game more complex and strategically demanding than traditional chess.
